The lovely Dayanara Torres, that woman with the amazing eyes, always melts when I post horse photos on my Instagram. “I love those pictures! You don’t know how much horses mean to me!”

So, well aware of Miss Universe’s passion for the animals, I called a friend in Malibu, movie producer Conroy Carter, who has a ranch to die for. I asked her if I could borrow it to take a few portraits of a friend and she said yes!

"I grew up in the country; in my hometown of Toa Alta I’ve been riding horses since I was eight. My father always had two horses on our ranch. The best memories I have with my father are when we went riding around the town," Dayanara says.

"Horses are beautiful, docile animals. They react to tenderness, a firm hand and respect. I collect a lot of horse art, like portraits and other things. Just looking at their faces, their elegance, their gaze, fills me with peace."

"Horses and I, we have a lot in common. The strength we have inside keeps us firmly on our life path."

"The horse’s spirit symbolizes the ability to overcome obstacles and reach goals, no matter what may cross your path. And obviously, you already know my story..."

"After I won Miss Universe 93 in Mexico I ended up in the Philippines. It was such luck. They received me with open arms. I lived there for five years and I have many beautiful memories of incredible experiences. They treat me like one of their own and their loyalty is admirable."

"My kids deserve all of my time and attention." says Dayanara about Cristian and Ryan, the two kids she had with singer and ex-husband Marc Anthony.

"The idea of my kids leaving our home one day, it scares me... But it’s part of life and of their path. I just hope I’ve done a good job. Seeing them become decent young men, amiable and respectful towards women... I think that is the most important part of a single woman raising boys."

We enjoyed such a beautiful day in Malibu... Every time I go and see the huge oaks and my friend Conroy's beautiful house nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains with her adopted horses running around, I’m always tempted to ask if she would consider adopting me as well…

"Three years ago, I closed my social media accounts and stayed away. But I knew one day I’d have to get back to it. So, I came back in summer of 2016. It’s not easy starting from zero, but thank God I was able to, thanks to my fans it is growing non stop. I like being in contact with people who love and admire the way I am and what I represent directly."

"I’m single for now... A relationship I was in for a few years ended in 2016 and although I’m a little hurt, it was the best for both of us." – ahem, a secret just came to light…

"I don’t ask anything of 2017, I ask it of myself: strength, courage to not fall at any obstacle, focus for the important things. Power and knowing how to balance my career, with continuing to be there to guide my children along every step."

"You have no idea how much I was looking forward to this wonderful 2017. It’s a very special year for me. The number 17 has always been my favorite. I know it will be a good year with lots of success. I’m starting on the right foot by going back to the Philippines." Best of luck, Dayanara! You know we love you! Have fun in the Philippines and come back soon!

You don’t know how much horses mean to me!” So, well aware of Miss Universe’s passion for the animals, I called a friend in Malibu, movie producer Conroy Carter, who has a ranch to die for. I asked her if I could borrow it to take a few portraits of a friend and she said yes! Every time I go  and see the huge oaks and her beautiful house nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains with her adopted horses running around, I’m always tempted to ask if she would consider adopting me as well… Anyway, where were we?

Our dear Boricua actress (Watch Over Me, The Nail, 200 Cartas)  is on her way to the Philippines. Dayanara Torres lived there for five years, after winning Miss Universe and before she married singer Marc Antony (father of her two boys, Cristian and Ryan). If you think Dayanara is a celebrity here, in the Philippines she is a Goddess! Yari, that’s her nickname,  has great memories of the place. She was adopted by the Philippines after being crowned in Mexico as one of the youngest ever Miss Universes. She was just nineteen. Soon after she began to have success after success in film, television and anything else she was presented with. That was, until love came along and screwed it all up! Ha! Well, NOT EVERYTHING. She has two amazing children and a life on her terms. These women… Who wants a heart, right?!  Anyway… where was I?

Beginning the year on the right foot, (should I say on the right horseshoe?) we spoke to Dayanara Torres about her life… In this exclusive feature, this is what she told us at Blog de los Angeles.

– Dayanara, you’ve always loved horses. Why is that?

– I grew up in the country; in my hometown of Toa Alta I’ve been riding horses since I was eight. My father always had two horses on our ranch. Horses are beautiful, docile animals. They react to tenderness, a firm hand and respect. I collect a lot of horse art, like portraits and other things. Just looking at their faces, their elegance, their gaze, fills me with peace. The best memories I have with my father are when we went riding around the town.

– In what way do you feel your spirit is like that of a horse?

– In the sense of nobility, freedom etc. We have a lot in common. The strength we have inside keeps us firmly on our life path. The horse’s spirit symbolizes the ability to overcome obstacles and reach goals, no matter what may cross your path. And obviously, you already know my story.

– Looking back, which moment of 2016 has brought you the most joy?

Spending time with my family. My sister and her family, my mother, every Easter and Summer. Seeing my boy Ryan play football for the first time and see how dedicated he is. Seeing Cristian go to his art classes at University knowing how talented he is. Being active on social media again, something that began in the summer of 2016. Being active once again, going to events, being in the public eye…

– And the hardest moment?

– Ending up in hospital again, six days the first time and two the second, with chronic asthma. The worst part is being alone here in L.A. when things like that happen because I’m usually with my kids 24/7 and I’ve had to rely on mothers from their schools to take care of them. I can’t explain how that happens, how strange, don’t you think? – she smiles with  irony-. But this year will be different, oh yeah! I’m sure of it.-that smile again…

– Your children are growing up. Is it difficult raising teenagers on your own?

– Difficult?? Very much so! This is why some people don’t understand why I haven’t been so active. My kids deserve all of my time and attention. It’s not only with school, it’s also with their extra curricular activities. They have activities from Monday to Friday after school. Music classes, sport, games, tournaments, art classes, education (Ryan is graduating from 8th grade and going to High School), as well as normal teenage appointments (dentists, orthodontist, dermatologist, podiatry, allergy doctors, asthma therapy etc.) All of that by myself!

-What is your favorite time of the day with them?

– There is a few! I love breakfast. A day never passes without us laughing about something. That tender hug when they get out of bed (after I knock 7 times to get them up). I love the drive to school and picking them up after. That’s when they most tell me things, they laugh. And, just before bed. Because, depending on how much homework they have, we try and watch a movie together with popcorn, or something we have recorded from T.V.

– What are they most rebellious about?

– Like any other teenager, homework and showering before dinner. They both like listening to youtubers while they play a game or draw (Cristian). Ryan likes practicing piano until he can play all of his friend Lin Manuel’s songs from Hamilton. And of course, they prefer fun over work.

– Which of the two is most like you and why?

– They’re both a lot like me. I’d say the eldest, Cristian, is probably more so though. We like drawing, watching The Walking Dead, the Marvel movies, Star Wars. But, Ryan is the dancer, and that he gets from me. He loves skateboarding and I love my skates. He always listens to music, just like me.

– Which is the nicest memory you have of them from 2016?

– Seeing Ryan at 13 become part of the football team and teach himself songs on the piano and guitar. He played the drums on his birthday for his friends. Cristian, 15, became top of his class in Spanish. He got into a University art class because of his talent. And seeing them spending time with their cousins and family.

– Life flies by… Soon they’ll be going off to University. Does that moment scare you? How do you think you’ll deal with that?

– It scares me, but it’s part of life and of their path. I just hope I’ve done a good job. Seeing them become decent young men, amiable and respectful towards women. I think that is the most important part of a single woman raising boys. But there’s still time before that happens. I’d rather live and enjoy the moment for now.

– You’ve been much more active on social networks than before. Why is that?

Yes, three years ago I closed my accounts and stayed away. But I knew one day I’d have to get back to it. So, I came back in summer of 2016. It’s not easy starting from zero, but thank God I was able to, thanks to my fans it is growing non stop. I like being in contact with people who love and admire the way I am and what I represent directly

– Soon you’ll be off to the Philippines where I know the people love you. They become big fans of the Blog as soon as you appear. And I’m really happy because finally they’ll be able to read your interviews in English. Are you excited about going back? And why? What are your best memories there?

– I’m so excited about going to a place that has given me so much. After I won Miss Universe 93 in Mexico I ended up in the Philippines. It was such luck. They received me with open arms. I made nine films, many commercials and I had two weekly television programs ASAP and Easy Dancing. I lived there for five years and I have many beautiful memories of incredible experiences. They treat me like one of their own and their loyalty is admirable. Now I’m going back to attend as a guest the Miss Universe contest. This will be held in the Philippines after 23 years! I can’t tell you how excited and happy I am.

– And what is going on with your heart? Is is taken?

– I’m single for now… A relationship I was in for a few years ended this year and although I’m a little hurt, it was the best for both of us. ahem, a secret just came to light…

– We all make resolutions at the beginning of the year. Could you tell me yours?

– You have no idea how much I was looking forward to this wonderful 2017. It’s a very special year for me. The number 17 has always been my favorite. I know it will be a good year with lots of success. I’m starting on the right foot by going back to the Philippines. I’ve also signed with Manila Genesis, who I was with back in the nineties. There are lots of interviews and covers planned. And also a project I’ve been working on for a few months, which is going to be incredible.

– What are you asking 2017 for?

– I don’t ask anything of 2017, I ask it of myself. Strength, courage to not fall at any obstacle, focus for the important things. Power and knowing how to balance my career, with continuing to be there to guide my children along every step. After what I have lived through, I know how strong I am and I know exactly where I want to go.

And we are confident that you will succeed and will be here to witness it. For all of us you already are a winner and a superwoman. First, because you are a mum and all mothers are superheroes; secondly, the devotion you have for your children is a clear measure of your true success. S, keep on fighting for your dreams! Have fun in the Philippines and come back soon to tell us all about it here at BLOG DE LOS ANGELES
